How to Trade on Hyperliquid: Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
Hyperliquid is an onchain exchange for perpetual futures and spot markets. Everything — orders, matching, settlement — happens on a purpose-built L1, so a trade fills in under a second and the whole order book is transparent. This guide walks through the practical steps: from opening the app to placing your first leveraged trade and protecting it with a stop-loss.
What you need before you start
- An EVM wallet or email login. Hyperliquid supports browser wallets (MetaMask, Rabby, WalletConnect-compatible apps) and email-based accounts. The app creates a trading account bound to that identity.
- USDC. The platform settles collateral in USDC on Arbitrum. Deposits are credited within a couple of minutes after the bridge confirms.
- A risk plan. Leverage multiplies both directions. Decide your maximum loss per trade before you click anything — 1–2% of the account is a common starting point.
Step 1 — Open the trading app
Go to the Hyperliquid app and connect. Once connected, the interface loads live prices from the public API: markets, order book depth, funding rates and candles are all served fresh, exactly as they trade. You can look around, switch coins and inspect charts without depositing anything.
Step 2 — Fund your account
Click Deposit and send USDC on Arbitrum to the address shown, or use the built-in bridge to move funds from another chain. Two things to remember:
- Send USDC on Arbitrum if you are depositing directly; other chains need the bridge route.
- Deposits are non-custodial in the sense that the exchange holds collateral in its own clearinghouse contract, not in a private company wallet — you can verify balances onchain at any time.
Step 3 — Pick a market
The market selector lists 300+ instruments: majors (BTC, ETH, SOL), long-tail alts, plus indices and FX pairs. Each row shows mark price, 24h volume, open interest and the current funding rate. Higher open interest generally means tighter spreads and less slippage for market orders.
Step 4 — Choose an order type
| Order | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Market | Fills immediately at the best available price | Entering or exiting fast, accepting some slippage |
| Limit | Rests in the book at your price or better | Patience, better fills, maker rebates |
| Stop-market / stop-limit | Triggers when the mark price crosses a level | Cutting losses, protecting profit |
| Take-profit | Closes a position at a target | Automating exits |
Step 5 — Set leverage and margin mode
Leverage on major perps goes up to 40× (lower for small caps). Cross margin shares one balance across positions; isolated margin caps the risk of a single trade at its own collateral. New traders should start isolated at 2–5× until they understand liquidation math.
The liquidation price is shown in the order panel. Keep it far from the current price: a 20× position is liquidated by roughly a 5% adverse move, which is a routine hourly swing in crypto.
Step 6 — Manage the trade
- Always attach a stop. Enter it in the same order ticket, before or immediately after the fill.
- Watch funding. Perpetuals pay funding every hour; on crowded longs the cost adds up and can quietly eat a small edge.
- Scale out rather than all-or-nothing: partial take-profits reduce the regret of both missing a runner and giving back gains.
What does it cost?
Taker fees start in the low single-digit basis points and drop with volume tiers; makers pay less and can receive rebates. Spot has its own lower schedule. Our fees breakdown covers tiers, funding and withdrawal costs in detail.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Trading a market with thin open interest — slippage eats the edge.
- Using max leverage on a coin with 8% hourly candles.
- Leaving a position open through a known event (listing, unlock, macro print) without a plan.
- Depositing more than you would risk on a new platform during your first week.
Ready? Open the Hyperliquid app and start with a single small isolated position.
